Firstly, Mr&Mrs Masuda are excellent hosts; you are welcome to their home. They were able to accommodate food restrictions. Kaiseki experience was enjoyable seeing the chef at work and learning more about Japanese culture through Mrs Masuda. And the food… chef Masuda gave us the most memorable food of the trip. You can tell the quality is exceptional. We wish Mr&Mrs Masuda continued success.

This restaurant provided a wonderful experience. I stumbled upon it while passing by and was drawn in by its warm atmosphere. The authentic Japanese cuisine made with seasonal local ingredients was delicious and bursting with flavor. The staff was incredibly friendly, and I enjoyed discussing Japanese culture with them. It’s a cozy place that makes me want to return again.

We came here for dinner and were very lucky to have a completely private experience. The dinner set menu was very well thought out, with all dishes bringing out the freshness and uniqueness of every ingredient very well. You can tell that a lot of care and thought went into each dish. The portion control was perfect as well.
The chef and the hostess were definitely the highlight of the experience itself. We went on a tour about geikos and flower towns in Kyoto the day before, and therefore being able to speak to the hostess, who is a former geiko, was extra special. Hospitality is certainly something this restaurant excels at!
All in all, this was a very special experience and certainly a gem from our experience in Kyoto. Highly recommended! -

I've always wanted to go to this restaurant! Finally, I got to go. We celebrated my mother's birthday here.
The restaurant had a luxurious yet homey atmosphere, and we enjoyed a delicious meal.
They're very particular about the ingredients, and as a Tochigi native, I was thrilled to be able to eat Tochigi Wagyu beef in Kyoto! I could sense the care that went into every dish, and it was truly delicious. I could also sense the attention to detail in the beautiful tableware. The food is not only delicious, but also visually appealing.
Both the chef and the proprietress are very friendly, and their cheerful and attentive hospitality is palpable.
I only visited yesterday, but I'm already looking forward to returning soon to enjoy the delicious food and a great time. lol
We had a wonderful time.
I wasn't able to take photos of all the food, but everything was beautiful and delicious. -

The attentive service made our dining experience even more enjoyable; both the chef and his wife were so welcoming and spoke excellent English. It's no wonder this place is featured in the Michelin Guide!! best food we’ve had in Japan. We can't wait to return!

Chef Takahito and his wife are such gracious hosts; it was so interesting speaking to them about their histories and how the restaurant developed. The food is stellar; we were lucky enough to spend two weeks in Japan, and this was the standout meal. We are so grateful to have had this experience.

I visited this restaurant while on a trip to Kyoto. I was completely satisfied with the food, the atmosphere, and the service.
The owner's attention to detail and attention to detail were very apparent in the food, including the plates. He also gave detailed explanations, making for a very enjoyable meal.
The interior, with its large, solid wood tables and Nikko cedar benches, was simple yet very warm, calming, and stylish.
The owner and landlady were very attentive and warm, and we felt very happy.
Furthermore, after the meal, my boyfriend proposed to me, making it a day we will remember forever.
I am truly grateful to everyone at the restaurant for their cooperation.
Now I have a reason to come to Kyoto again!
Thank you very much. -

是非、ますます増田にご来店あれ。

We arrived at our long-awaited restaurant, a single light shining from the quiet residential area. The atmosphere was simply amazing! Opening the door, we found ourselves in a simple yet very Japanese-style interior, where the owner's attention to detail was evident everywhere. The atmosphere was fantastic, and our anticipation for the food grew even stronger as we sat down. Though a little nervous, we immediately toasted with a bottle of beer. 🍻 The course meal then began, and the table arrangement created a truly immersive dining experience! It's not something you can experience very often! As for the food itself, I was overwhelmed. Perhaps this is what they mean when they say it was "incredibly delicious." To be honest, I often go to various restaurants for business dinners, but this one stood out among them with its overwhelming deliciousness. The trout sushi in particular was shockingly delicious, and apparently the flavor changes depending on the season... I'd love to try a different flavor. The seasonal koppe crab, painstakingly prepared by the owner, was a perfect match with the Tosa vinegar jelly, which I personally thought created an exquisite harmony between the umami of the crab and the refreshing acidity of the Tosa vinegar. I wanted to spend this moment forever. Haha. Also, personally, I consulted with the restaurant and used it as a venue for my proposal. Thanks to the owner's kind cooperation, it was a great success. There's no doubt that it was a memorable place and day. It was one of the best times of my life.
Please come visit Masuda again and again. -

We had an incredible dinner last night at Masu Madu Masuda, a small, elegant restaurant tucked away in the Nishiji neighborhood. It’s only been open since March 2024, but it already delivers a world-class dining experience.
The space is warm and intimate—formerly a traditional townhouse, now thoughtfully converted by the young owner-chef and his wife. Seating is counter-style, giving you a front-row view of the chef’s precise, artful work and a chance to engage with his passion for his craft.
The 10-course omakase menu was hands-down the best meal we’ve had in Japan—and that’s saying something. Highlights included exquisite Tochigi Wagyu and Tochigi trout, ingredients that reflect the couple’s roots in the Tochigi region.
Adding to the magic is the chef’s wife, a former geisha, who brings a level of grace and hospitality you rarely experience. Her presence elevates the evening into something truly special.
This is a place with heart, talent, and soul. A must-visit in Kyoto. -

The couple (chef and his wife) were delightful, explained everything and curious about us. Very special and unique experience.

Everything was perfect, from the lovely welcome to the setting and the wonderful, delicious food. The hostess is a former Geisha so is highly skilled in welcoming guests and making them feel at home. Even though we speak almost zero Japanese, there was no language barrier and she made us feel like honoured guests. The dining room is small, just three other diners with us that evening, and it feels like you really have been invited into the owner's home.
We were treated to course after course - ten in all - of the most sumptuous, beautiful food, prepared in front of us by the chef, who also introduced each course. Some of the courses were clearly inspired by his youth and had special meaning for him. The flavours were delightful, the presentation exquisite.
The restaurant is tucked away down a small street and a taxi is recommended to take you there. It is certainly worth finding - if ever I go back to Kyoto, and I truly hope to one day, I will make a point of returning to this restaurant where the food, the welcome and the whole experience made the birthday meal one we shall remember forever. Thank you! -

Arrive at Gion-Shijo Station on the Keihan Railway.
Take Kyoto City Bus No. 12 from Minamiza-za Station for approximately 30 minutes, enjoying views of Kawaramachi, Karasuma, and Nijo Castle. Get off at Horikawa Nakatachiuri, approximately 5 minutes away.
The restaurant is located across from the ruins of Ichijo-in, where Murasaki Shikibu served.
I expected a charming residential streetscape, but it turned out to be Nishijin.
I nervously opened the door, only to be greeted by the chef, his wife, and a 500-year-old Nikko cedar tree.
Inside the restaurant is a counter made from a single piece of wood.
We toasted with a lemon sour (1,200 yen) made with lemons from Mikaku Island, Hiroshima Prefecture.
Chef's Choice Course: 10 dishes, 20,000 yen (tax included)
⚪ Appetizer: Kabocha Surinagashi (Simmered Pumpkin)
A rich pumpkin simmered in a Halloween-themed sauce, with deep-fried autumn eggplant and brown mushrooms.
From the very first dish, the food was painstakingly prepared.
⚪ Sashimi: Bluefin tuna, medium fatty tuna, and lightly grilled Spanish mackerel.
The salting of the Spanish mackerel was exquisite.
⚪ Grilled: Pacific saury
After grilling the Pacific saury, the bones and innards were removed and it was then rehydrated with green onions and barley miso.
This was the first fatty Pacific saury of the year.
I even thought this would be a good last meal of the year.
⚪ Sushi: Masu Masu Trout Sushi
Our signature dish.
"Itadakimasu" trout, farmed over five years, marinated in Tochigi grape juice. The rice is topped with yuba and peanuts. A creative dish.
⚪ Bowl: Soft-shelled turtle jelly.
Soft-shelled turtle broth with bamboo shoots and white onions.
Since it was served in a dumpling bowl, we enjoyed the "Daiginjo Meigetsu" sake in a dumpling cup.
Vintage: 2007.
⚪ Fried Conger Eel and Matsutake Mushroom
Hot fries accented with sansho pepper soy sauce.
⚪ Blanched Salmon
A dish of slowly cooked shrimp potatoes, ginkgo nuts, and the edible chrysanthemum "Motenohoka" (sweet bean paste) combined with a sweet bean paste filling.
⚪ Tochigi Wagyu
Sukiyaki-style Tochigi Wagyu beef and Nikko Maitake mushrooms
Egg from Miyama, Kyoto, and powdered sansho pepper.
Served monthly as mapo or shogayaki.
⚪ White rice cooked in a clay pot
Pickled vegetables, dried baby sardines with sansho pepper, and red miso soup.
Tochigi rice has small grains, allowing you to eat as many as you want in one bite.
The meal concludes with caffeine-free bancha tea for babies.
⚪ Dessert
Monaka wafers served in Gion Kobu bowls.
A crispy texture is important, so the mochi skin is toasted and filled with homemade bean paste and mascarpone cheese ice cream. Topped with seasonal Shine Muscat grapes.
We want to cherish this artistic Japanese cuisine as a Japanese treasure, and we also want to show it off to our overseas guests.
Private reservations are available for 6 to 10 people.
The interactions between the owner, who trained at a famous Japanese restaurant, and the proprietress, a former geisha, provide refined, first-class hospitality. -

We visited this restaurant while on a trip with my wife.
The food was delicious, made with ingredients from Kyoto and Tochigi.
The restaurant had a very comfortable atmosphere, with atmospheric single-piece wooden tables at the center and a view of the well-maintained courtyard.
Every dish, prepared and served by the chef right in front of us, was absolutely delicious.
The chef's wife, the proprietress, was also a wonderful person, with her attentive attention to detail and cheerful personality. Thanks to her, my wife, who usually tends to be nervous when eating out, seemed to be able to relax and enjoy herself throughout the meal.
We were also very happy to be able to try their original gin, NISHI-GIN, which is only available in this area.
This was a wonderful restaurant that I would definitely recommend visiting on a trip or for a special occasion.
I would definitely like to visit again. -

A former geisha is the hostess! Enjoy a night of Tochigi cuisine in Kyoto!
I found out about a restaurant run by a former geisha in Kateigaho, where you can enjoy Japanese cuisine made with Tochigi ingredients. I made a reservation with the female president of my real estate agency and we're off!
To get there, take city bus 12 from Karasuma Station Exit 26, get off at Horikawa Nakatachiuri, and walk for about 5 minutes.
A taxi ride from Karasuma Station was 2,100 yen.
The building is a Kyoto tenement townhouse.
Entering the restaurant, you're greeted by the Olympic torch!
By the way, the hostess told me that she ran in the Tokyo Marathon, and runners are eligible to purchase a torch commemorative gift. This treasured possession is on display.
Furthermore, when you open the door, you'll find a counter seating area made from a single piece of wood.
It's spacious. Private reservations are available for groups of six or more.
There's a round, white earthenware pot in the back.
We started off excitedly, looking forward to charcoal-grilled food and earthenware pot rice!
The chef previously worked at Kusaku Nakahigashisan, where they had an earthenware pot, and apparently this is the name of the place.
All food will start at the same time.
I apologize for calling on the day asking for an earlier start without knowing. m(._.)m I regret it.
Only the 20,000 yen course is available.
First, we started with drinks.
I told them I don't drink much, and they recommended a soft drink:
●Shizuoka Kawane Tea Sparkling?
So we decided to have one.
My boss also doesn't like alcohol, so we chose the following:
●Kyoto Tsujiri Matcha Ice Cold Brew
We were both drawn to the delicious Chinese tea at the Westin, so we started with tea again.
Both were delicious!
●Appetizer
Nikko Maitake Mushroom Surinagashi
Included grilled eggplant and zucchini.
Starting with something cold, it felt like summer and autumn with mushrooms.
●Sashimi
Bluefin tuna, kelp-cured scallops
Served with a squeeze of sudachi citrus juice.
Wrapped in grated kelp, it was flavorful and delicious.♡
●Grilled Food
Stiletto, Grilled Guji with Scales
Turnip with Mustard Miso
The tilefish was perfectly cooked and delicious.
Turnip with mustard miso. The slightly pungent flavor was delicious.
●Sushi
Apparently, this is their signature dish.
The trout sushi is even more delicious!
We use "Itadakimasu" (sweet trout) from Tochigi Prefecture, which is farmed by a friend of the chef.
The peanuts and yubai (sweetfish sashimi) from Chiba Prefecture are fragrant and delicious.
●Soup
Matsutake mushroom and conger eel soup. The conger eel was also fatty and delicious.
The edamame tofu was sweet and delicious.
● Fried Foods
Hairy Crab Spring Rolls
Spring rolls with dried gourd and yam, soaked in crab broth. Served with grapefruit.
Hairy crab♡ & grapefruit? ?
The grapefruit is refreshing and delicious with the fried food.
● Blanched Vegetables
Winter melon and myoga ginger with cucumber jelly.
I forgot to tell them I don't like cucumber or myoga.
The president seemed so pleased that he asked how it was made.
● Tochigi Wagyu
Apparently, this Wagyu beef is rice-fed.
Low-fat Wagyu beef. Just the right amount of lean ginger pork.
Delicious♡
● White Rice (Pickles, Dried Dried Chirimen with Sansho Pepper, Red Miso Soup)
The clay pot rice is incredibly delicious♡
Rice lovers will love it♡
The chef's mother's pickled vegetables.
The red miso soup contains nameko mushrooms. Confession! I love nameko miso soup!
● Dessert
Kyoho grape sorbet with white wine jelly.
The Kyoho grape aroma is wonderful, and the white wine jelly is also amazing!
To finish off, we had baby bancha tea.
It was easy to drink and not bitter.
I've seen it before, but this was my first time trying it.
Every dish is so elaborately prepared,
I'm always amazed, moved, and overwhelmed with a sense of deliciousness.
The proprietress, a former geisha, moved from Tochigi to Kyoto at the age of 15.
She talked about her efforts to become a maiko, and then her transition to geisha.
And then she got married.
As an Osaka native, I had a wonderful time listening to her stories.
It would have been more lively if we'd been able to see the food being cooked in the okudosan from a closer distance.
They called a taxi for us,
and the lovely, smiling couple saw us off.
It was a lovely couple and a delicious meal. -

We visited this restaurant on our honeymoon.
All of the dishes were made with carefully selected ingredients and were all delicious.
The restaurant also had many unique features, and it was very interesting to hear about them.
The owner is a very friendly person, and his wife is a former maiko, so we had a great time hearing stories from that time, which are rare to hear.
I would definitely like to visit again when I visit Kyoto. -

It’s like a visit at the Masuda’s family house. The food was amazing. The chef introduced each dish and explained where the ingredients were from. He used local Japanese ingredients as well as ingredients from his hometown, Nikko. It was truly a one-of-a-kind experience if you are looking for an authentic Japanese dining experience. Thank you for having us and for sharing your unique cuisine and culture with us.
