This article explores the topic above while sharing insights into Japanese cuisine, Kyoto’s culture, and the chef’s perspective. We hope it helps you enjoy your visit to Kyoto even more.
Is There a Dress Code for Kaiseki?
One of the questions we often receive from international guests is:
“Do I need to wear a suit or a dress for kaiseki?”
The answer is no.
At Masumasu Masuda, we do not require formal attire such as suits, jackets, or evening dresses.
We want our guests to feel relaxed and comfortable while enjoying their time in Kyoto.
Whether you’re visiting after a day of sightseeing or celebrating a special occasion, you are welcome to come in comfortable clothing.
Dress Comfortably for the Season
Kyoto can be extremely hot during the summer, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C (95°F).
Short-sleeved shirts, shorts, summer dresses, and other comfortable seasonal clothing are perfectly acceptable.
Our goal is for you to enjoy the food and atmosphere—not to worry about what you’re wearing.
Clothing We Ask Guests to Avoid
To maintain a pleasant dining environment for everyone, we kindly ask guests not to wear overly revealing clothing or tank tops when visiting our restaurant.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us create a comfortable atmosphere for all guests.
A Kind Request About Perfume
Kaiseki is an experience that engages all five senses.
The delicate aromas of seasonal ingredients and carefully prepared dashi are just as important as their taste.
For this reason, we kindly ask guests to avoid wearing strong perfume or excessive amounts of fragrance when visiting.
If a fragrance is so strong that it significantly affects the dining experience of other guests, we may need to speak with you or, in rare cases, decline entry.
Thank you for helping us preserve the atmosphere and enjoyment of traditional Japanese cuisine for everyone.
Enjoy Japanese Cuisine Without Worry
Kaiseki is not about formal dress—it’s about appreciating the beauty of the seasons, exceptional ingredients, and Japanese hospitality.
We hope you’ll come as you are, relax, and enjoy an unforgettable dining experience in Kyoto.
